February 27, 2010 Monthly at Luther Britt Park
The Lumberton Disc Golf Association held the second monthly tournament of the 2010 season at Luther Britt Park in Lumberton today. The temperature rose as the day went on and the players that travelled to Lumberton were rewarded with a good day for golf. Fifteen players attended and the largest group was once again the Recreational division. There were plenty of good rounds and a few players were just one stroke away from the next player. Craig Dunham of Fayetteville won the Open division but it took two playoff holes after the second round for him to claim the victory. Roger "Thor" Raby of Saint Pauls played in the Advanced division for the first time and walked away with the win. Tommy Daniels of Southport shot an impressive -7 to win the Recreational division which had three players at par or better. The LDGA also gained four new members and one renewal. There were thirteen bag tags that were up for grabs today with Tommy Daniel taking the lowest number, #2 that was in play. The #22 is now in play and many of the lower tag holders will be receiving challenges in the coming days. Look for those LDGA tags hanging from bags all across North Carolina. The Ace Pool is the largest that it has ever been. While no one claimed the $215 prize for a hole in one, everyone was running hard at the baskets. The skills challenge known as Thor's Challenge also reached a milestone. This month's edition raised a $66 pot that was split 50/50 with the club and the winning participants. Players were given two throws at a basket from a short distance with points awarded for hitting various parts of the basket. Tommy Daniels and Wesley Bell of Southport tied for the most points and each took $17.50. There were 8 Closest to the Pin contests on various holes in addition to our Green CTP, which is an optional $1 per participant CTP on Hole 10. We usually have a good number of CTP contests each month and want to invite everyone to mark their calendar for the March 27th event. We would love to see it become our largest event ever.
April 22, 2010 Luther Britt Win or Swim One Month Away
Current
The first stop on the Spike Hyzer Developmental PDGA Tour is the Luther Britt Win or Swim and it is just one month away. The event is in its second year and has been moved from the month of June to weekend of May 22nd. Registration is open through the PDGA website and pre-registration is recommended. Those individuals that do register prior to the event will be put into a drawing for a Spike Hyzer Competition Cooler bag. That is a$125 value for one lucky participant. While Spike Hyzer has sponsors lined up for all three tour events, the LDGA is actively looking for sponsors. This year the cash payout will be split between the Professional and Amateur divisions. With the absence of a player's package and the additional cash from Tour and Event sponsors, this year's event promises to be one of the most lucrative events of the season for all divisions.
March 6, 2010 LDGA at the Rumba on the Lumba
The LDGA and its members were in full force at the Rumba on the Lumba civic festival in Lumberton. The LDGA set up a booth and provided the community with a glimpse of disc golf life. A temporary basket was on hand with donated discs for festival participants to try. LDGA merchandise was available for purchase and members passed out literature detailing what the LDGA has to offer at Luther Britt Park. Registration forms and fliers were distributed to youth to promote the Northeast Park Clinic planned for the next month. Youth ages 5 -18 will be provided a free golf disc and get a chance to try a temporary course. LDGA members will be on hand to provide basic instruction on the rules of play and the mechanics of disc flight.
March 27, 2010 Monthly at Luther Britt Park
The March installment of the Lumberton monthly was a great success. Fourteen players from all over NC descended on Luther Britt Park on March 27th for great day of disc golf. The seasonal winds took over the park for much of the day with players making tough decisions between gusts. In addition to that, the recent rains caused the course to shrink as the water level was raised above the storm drains of the lower lake. After all was said and done, only one round was recorded under par and the best total score was just one stroke over par. In spite of the conditions, the players enjoyed the day. While the Ace Pool was once again safe from the onslaught of players' throws, it has grown to a respectable $220. Each participant contributes one dollar of their entry fee to be paid out to the anyone that records a hole in one Ace. There were seven Closest to the Pin contests on the day with a few players nestling their shots in the shadow of the basket. Chris Shirring, 2009 LDGA member, returned from Ohio to play in the event and was rewarded when his throw on #10 netted him the $14 Green CTP. The Green CTP is an optional community CTP with participants contributing $1 to the winning player. Each month the LDGA offers a skills challenge in the honor of LDGA member Roger "Thor" Raby. For the second month in a row, Thor's Challenge was run by Thor, who leaves for Afghanistan this month. Derek Hastings of Southern Pines was the winner of this month's installment of Thor's Challenge. Each participant was given two throws to place as close to each other as possible after traveling a specified distance.
January 31, 2010 Luther Britt Win or Swim Joins the SpikeHyzer Developmental PDGA Tour
The LDGA is teaming up with SpikeHyzer to produce a professional PDGA tour event for North Carolina. The Luther Britt Win or Swim II is being moved up this year from June to May. The event will be held on May 22 and 23 at Luther Britt Park in Lumberton, NC. This is the first of the 3 “B” tier PDGA events that Spike Hyzer will be organizing. With this being the first of the 3 events attendance, is a must if you want to participate the in the Moe’s Southwest Grill Points Race. Of course one of the more exciting features of this event as well as the other Spike Hyzer PDGA events is that there will be added cash not only to the pro divisions, but the am divisions as well. 2009 was the inaugural season of the Luther Britt Win or Swim as well as the first PDGA event run by Chuck “Chuckster” Connelly. The field seemed pleased with the play of the course and the rewarding payout at the end of the tournament. Playing around 2 large lakes and with the “X” hole making it’s fabled return to Luther Britt Park, this course will once again challenge players of all skill levels. The event was held last year in June and the heat was intense on the open course, which was the deciding factor in moving the date to May. To pre register you can go to the PDGA website follow the prompt next to the tournament listing on the PDGA schedule to register online. You can also find a form on the Luther Britt Win or Swim II registration page that can be printed up and mailed in. Don’t forget, for each event you pre register in you will be entered in a drawing to win a cooler competition bag. Drawing will be held at the end of the Sanford Slingers Spring Sling III.
April 10, 2010 Free Disc Golf Clinic at Northeast Park
The LDGA held a free disc golf clinic for school age children at Lumberton's newest park, the Northeast Park complex. Members were on hand to set up a temporary 9 hole course around the park and provide participants with a free golf disc. Young throwers were exposed to the game on a shortened version of the proposed course for the park. The holes were designed to be between 200 to 250 ft in length with limited obstacles. While the holiday season may have affected the turnout, those that attended were enthusiastic to the new sport. LDGA members were also enthusiastic to the proposed course at the park. Prior to the arrival of the first participants, members played along the course and discussed possible pin and tee locations. The goal of the LDGA is to present Lumberton with a beginner friendly course that is capable of exposing the sport to the community. Many of the features of the beloved Luther Britt Course are absent at Northeast Park. The new course will be geared more to the recreational player while Luther Britt Park can provide the community with a champion caliber course to challenge the more advanced player.
